Federal law protects patients from surprise medical bills in certain situations. If you receive emergency services or certain non-emergency services at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgery center from an out-of-network provider, you may not be billed more than your in-network cost-sharing amount (such as copayments, coinsurance, or deductibles).
