Introduction to Labiaplasty

Many women are self-conscious about their labia and find that they cannot wear tight clothing or yoga pants, have twisting or tugging in underwear, and can even have their labia visible in their bathing suits! This can be especially challenging when they choose to be intimate with someone, especially for the first time, as it can be a very vulnerable and intimidating experience. At Ravive Plastic Surgery, Dr. Bhat and her team want women in the Tampa area to have the opportunity to feel better about themselves and more confident in their bodies with Labiaplasty. To learn more about this surgery, how it is performed, and what it can do for you, please keep reading the information below.

What is Labiaplasty?

Also referred to as a labial reduction, Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that can reduce the size of your labia minora. Often, this procedure can include a clitoral hood reduction, which reduces the redundant/extraneous portion of your clitoral hood.

Dr. Bhat will assess the treatment area to determine the best surgical technique to address your specific needs and cosmetic goals.

  • Improved appearance of the vulva/vaginal area
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Increased sexual pleasure
  • Reduction in pain or discomfort

Who are the Best Candidates for Labiaplasty?

The best candidates for Labiaplasty in Tampa are women who are in good overall health, over 18 years of age and have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure. Women who experience discomfort or pain during activities or who are unhappy with the appearance of their labia are good candidates for this surgery, as well as women who are self-conscious about their labial size or appearance or have labial tears resulting from childbirth.

What’s the First Step?

If you feel like a Tampa Labiaplasty is right for you, the first step is to schedule your appointment at Ravive Plastic Surgery. When you come in for your consultation, you will get to meet with Dr. Deepa Bhat who will listen to your body goals, perform a physical exam in a discreet and comfortable manner, and answer any questions you may have. She will also ask you some questions regarding your lifestyle and medical history.

Once a surgical plan is agreed upon, our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule the day and time for your procedure and provide you with important information regarding pre- and post-operative care.

What to Expect on the Day of Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure. Once you’ve been made comfortable and are properly sedated, Dr. Bhat will be ready to begin the procedure.

This procedure is often performed via two different surgical techniques. The first requires Edge Trimming, which is the process of removing the free edge of each labia to reduce the portion present outside of the Labia Majora.

The second surgical technique is Wedge Resection, which involves the removal of a triangular wedge of tissue with the remaining portions sutured back together. Dr. Bhat will discuss with you which technique would be best, as technique selection is dependent on a multitude of the patient’s anatomic and lifestyle factors.

Clitoral Hood Reduction is then performed, if necessary. While this is widely considered to be a technically difficult procedure that can have consequences if not done correctly, Dr. Bhat utilizes her experience and knowledge to use this technique to decrease the chance of scarring around the clitoris by placing the incision at a safe distance from the clitoral hood.

Your surgery will typically take between one and two hours.

Labiaplasty Recovery

After Dr. Bhat releases you post-surgery, you will be able to return home to rest. We strongly recommend having a family member or friend available to drive you home because you will most likely be sore and feeling the effects of anesthesia.

You should take at least a week off of work so that you can heal comfortably. There will be some mild-to-moderate pain and swelling that can make sitting uncomfortable. Dr. Bhat does prescribe temporary pain medication to assist you during the initial stages of recovery, but you can also apply an ice pack to alleviate some of the soreness.

You should avoid the use of tampons or any sexual activity for about four to five weeks. Any scars will fade within a few weeks to a couple of months.
