Introduction to Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Gynecomastia is a common condition that results in enlarged male breast tissue and often appears during periods of hormone fluctuations, typically starting in adolescence and extending through the mid-fifties, sometimes even later. When it occurs during adolescence, gynecomastia often resolves on its own. However, in adult patients, the excess breast tissue often does not resolve on its own and requires surgery to fix.

At Ravive Plastic Surgery in Tampa, FL, Dr. Bhat and her team strive to provide the best results possible for our male patients with Gynecomastia surgery. To learn more about this procedure, please continue reading the information provided below.

What is Gynecomastia & Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery, also called Male Breast Reduction, is a surgical procedure designed to remove the excess tissue along the breasts, providing you with a smoother and tighter chest. With a proper diet and routine exercise, the results of male breast reduction can be permanent!

To rule out any serious conditions, patients should consult with their primary care physician to try and rule out other, more serious causes. If the condition does not resolve on its own after six to twelve months, surgical intervention may be required for correction.

What’s the First Step?

If you feel that a Male Breast Reduction procedure (Gynecomastia) in Tampa is right for you, the first step is to schedule your consultation at Ravive Plastic Surgery. When you come in for this appointment, you will meet with Dr. Bhat who will listen to your body goals, examine your chest, and answer any questions you may have. She will also ask you some questions regarding your lifestyle and medical history, so it is very important to be open and honest with her because the information you provide helps prevent any unnecessary risks or side effects.

Once the two of you are satisfied with the direction of your surgery, Dr. Bhat will create your custom procedure plan. Our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule the date of your surgery and provide you with any necessary information and instructions that will help you achieve the best possible outcome.

What to Expect on the Day of Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

When you come in for your Gynecomastia surgery, you will first be administered general anesthesia. Once you are asleep, Dr. Bhat will make tiny incisions either through the armpit or around the areola, and insert a small tube called a cannula. The tube is moved back and forth along the fat deposits in your chest to loosen it up and suck it out via liposuction.

After this, there are usually larger amounts of glandular tissue and skin that will need to be excised and removed. If this is necessary, Dr. Bhat will make small incisions around the bottom of the nipple and remove the excess glandular tissue directly. Not every patient will require both techniques, but it is not uncommon for both to be performed to achieve the best look possible. Dr. Bhat will finish by closing the incisions with sutures. Your chest will then be wrapped with a compression bandage to help minimize swelling, bleeding, and bruising.

The entire surgery generally takes between one and two hours to complete.

Gynecomastia Recovery

After your procedure, we will keep you in our recovery room as you come out of sedation. After you are released by Dr. Bhat, you will be able to return home, but you should have a friend or family member provide you with a ride.

The outcomes following this procedure are almost immediately visible and most men are extremely excited about the change in appearance. Any incisions made during surgery take time to heal and any scars left behind are generally very well-concealed. Once cleared by Dr. Bhat, you can gradually return to incorporating exercise and weight training into your daily routine, which will help accentuate the surgical results.
