Introduction to Upper Eyelid Surgery

Many people don’t think about their eyelids as much as they should. Your upper eyelids can significantly impact your appearance and ability to see. Patients suffering from sagging eyebrows or droopy upper lids look older and often have impaired vision.

Upper eyelid surgery opens up the eyes and can help improve these problems. If you are considering upper eyelid surgery in Tampa, FL, Dr. Bhat and her team of specialists at Ravive Plastic Surgery can help you achieve a more youthful facial appearance with this in-office procedure.

What is Upper Eyelid Surgery?

Upper eyelid surgery (upper Blepharoplasty) is a cosmetic and functional procedure that removes excess skin from the upper eyelids to improve visibility and appearance. It involves Dr. Deepa Bhat making delicate incisions on the eyelids, removing the excess tissue, and closing the incision to naturally blend in with the contours of your eyelid. Dr. Bhat can help you achieve smoother, more defined eyelid contours, enhance eyelid symmetry, and brighten your overall facial appearance by meticulously sculpting and reshaping the upper eyelids.

If you suffer from ptosis of the upper eyelid, where the margin of the eyelid sits too low and covers the pupil due to poor muscular function, you may require a separate surgery called ptosis repair.

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting upper eyelid surgery in Tampa is to call Ravive Plastic Surgery and schedule a consultation with Dr. Bhat. When you come in, Dr. Bhat will discuss your goals and concerns and assess your upper eyelids to design a treatment plan for you. The consultation is the perfect time to ask any questions you may have, learn about the intricacies of the procedure, and talk about pain management during and after the surgery. We will also take some photos of your eyes to compare with after surgery.

Dr. Bhat will be able to use all of this information to create your surgical plan, after which our patient coordinator will help you schedule your surgical appointment. You will also be given instructions to follow before surgery to help make it as successful as possible, including avoiding certain medications like blood thinners, removing any eyebrow piercings, and avoiding sun exposure.

What to Expect on the Day of an Upper Eyelid Surgery

Since this is an in-office procedure, it won’t be performed in a surgical center but rather in the same location as your consultation. First, you will check into our practice and meet with Dr. Bhat, who will review the techniques and goals of your surgery and address any last-minute concerns or questions. Once the two of you are ready, you will be administered anesthesia to ensure a painless and comfortable procedure.

Dr. Bhat will begin by making incisions on the upper eyelids, which are strategically placed to naturally blend in with your eye’s natural contours so there is no visible scarring. She will then remove any redundant skin and muscle to meticulously and carefully sculpt and contour your eyelids to achieve natural-looking, harmonious results. The incisions are then closed.

Before you leave, our team will provide instructions to aid your recovery and ensure a smooth healing process.

Upper Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Upper Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be done at our office, so you will be able to return home the same day of your surgery. As your vision may be impaired due to swelling from the surgical site, you must arrange transportation to and from our clinic. You can expect some mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising around the eyes immediately following the procedure, but these should subside on their own during the first two weeks.

While you may slowly resume some light walking after a few days, it’s most important to rest. This means you will need to reduce your screen time or reading for too long to avoid placing unnecessary strain on your eyes. You will also need to avoid sun exposure as best as possible to prevent discoloration while healing, so wear sunglasses and a hat and apply quality sunblock whenever you go outside. Any scarring from the incisions can take up to a few months to fade completely.

As your eyelids gradually heal and the bruising and swelling subside, you’ll begin to notice the transformative effects of your upper eyelid surgery. Your eyes will appear refreshed, rejuvenated, and more youthful.
