Introduction to Labiaplasty

Many women feel self-conscious about their labial appearance, so when they choose to be intimate with someone, especially for the first time, it can be a very vulnerable and intimidating experience. At Ravive Plastic Surgery, Dr. Bhat and her team want women in the Tampa area to have the opportunity to experience enhanced self-confidence and security through personalized cosmetic solutions like labiaplasty. To learn more about this surgery, how it’s performed, and what it can do for you, please keep reading the information we have included below.

What is Labiaplasty?

Also referred to as a labial reduction, Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that can reduce the size of your labia minora. Often, this procedure can include a clitoral hood reduction, which reduces the redundant/extraneous portion of your clitoral hood.

Dr. Bhat will assess the treatment area to determine the best surgical technique to address your specific needs and cosmetic goals.

Who are the Best Candidates for Labiaplasty?

The best candidates for Labiaplasty in Tampa are women who are in good overall health, over 18 years of age, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure. The procedure is ideal for those struggling with discomfort or pain during everyday activities like biking or exercising and those who feel self-conscious about their vaginal appearance. Additionally, labiaplasty is an excellent solution for women with labial tears resulting from childbirth.

What’s the First Step?

If a Tampa Labiaplasty is right for you, the first step is to schedule your appointment at Ravive Plastic Surgery. During your initial meeting with Dr. Bhat, the doctor will listen to your body goals, perform a physical exam in a discreet and comfortable manner, and answer any questions you may have. She will also ask you some questions regarding your lifestyle and medical history.

Once a surgical plan is agreed upon, our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule the day and time for your procedure and provide you with important information regarding pre- and post-operative care.

What to Expect on the Day of Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation or general anesthesia, depending on your preferences and Dr. Bhat’s suggestions. Once you are resting peacefully, Dr. Bhat will begin the procedure.

This procedure uses two different surgical techniques. The first technique involves trimming the edges of the labia lips to reduce the portion outside of the labia majora.

The second type of labiaplasty technique is known as Wedge Resection. It involves removing a small, wedge-shaped piece of tissue and suturing the remaining portions back together. Dr. Bhat will discuss with you which technique would be best, as technique selection is dependent on a multitude of the patient’s anatomic and lifestyle factors.

Clitoral Hood Reduction is then performed, if necessary. While this is widely considered to be a technically difficult procedure that can have consequences if not done correctly, Dr. Bhat utilizes her experience and knowledge to decrease the chance of post-operative scarring by placing incisions at a critical distance from the clitoral hood.

Your surgery will typically take between one and two hours.

Labiaplasty Recovery

After Dr. Bhat releases you post-surgery, you will be able to return home to rest. It is critical that you schedule a responsible adult, friend, or family member to drive you home, as you will still be groggy from anesthesia or sedation. Most patients take at least one week off from work to ensure a comfortable and optimal healing process. It is normal to encounter mild swelling and soreness in the treated areas. Dr. Bhat will prescribe temporary pain medication to assist you during the initial stages of recovery. You can also apply an ice pack to help offset any lingering tenderness.

You should take at least a week off of work so that you can heal comfortably. There will be some mild-to-moderate pain and swelling that can make sitting uncomfortable. Dr. Bhat does prescribe temporary pain medication to assist you during the initial stages of recovery, but you can also apply an ice pack to alleviate some of the soreness.

You should avoid the use of tampons or any sexual activity for about four to five weeks. Any scars will fade within a few weeks to a couple of months.
